Unsafe drugs…

I just came from this site in regards to unsafe products/devices. I was extremely surprised by a few items on the list.  One of the items that caught my attention immediately was Motrin (or Ibuprofen).  Did you know that Ibuprofen / Motrin can cause skin allergies, heart failure, swelling and ulcers?  I sear, sometimes the drug itself has so many side affects that you have to ask yourself — is it really worth taking?

I can honestly say that I have never met anyone who has had a diverse reaction to a drug (over the counter, prescription, or otherwise).  I would say that if I had met someone who had an adverse reaction, I would advise them to see their doctor about it right away!  Allergic reactions and other kinds of incompatibilities with prescription or over the counter drugs need to be reported so that those who make the drugs can either fix the problem or take the drug off of the market.

I would say that the site linked above is a helpful resource in finding drugs that are unsafe for you or your loved ones.  Moving forward, you should know that knowledge is power!  The more you know, the more you may be able to help someone else.

Have you had any side affects caused by any of the drugs listed?

Frugal moms: Fabric softener recipe

Michigan Mommas - Homemade fabric softener

I have found that homemade fabric softener works so much better than the stuff I buy from the store!!  The upside?  It’s also cheaper and much more organic!  It’s nice to have a cleaner where you can pronounce all of the ingredients and not worry that the chemicals used will be harmful in the long run!

Homemade Fabric Softener:

1 – empty gallon-sized container (ex:  milk jug)

1 – cup of baking soda

6 – cups of distilled white vinegar (DO NOT use Apple Cider vinegar as it could stain!!)

8 – cups of water

Want a yummy smell?

10-15 drops of scented oil.  You can use Essential oils (popular).  In addition, you can find scented oil at a hobby / crafty store OR  try Googling fragrance and body oils / scented oil for fabric softener

1.  Add baking soda to your container.

2.  Add 1 cup of water to your container.

3.  Slowly add the vinegar to your container (it will fizz).

4.  Add the rest of the water to your container.

5.  Add the scented oil (optional)

Shake bottle to blend ingredients (especially if you have added scented oil) and then use!  :)

Frugal prices for glasses…

Vision issues run in my family. In fact, I would say that about 40 – 50% of my family wear eyeglasses or contacts. As I get older, I find that I too am having some eye issues. Of course, as a parent, I worry about my children’s vision too.

We live in a world where insurance doesn’t come cheap. In fact, many of us probably live without vision coverage. As you well know, dear reader… glasses, contacts and eye exams just aren’t that cheap! But why suffer and buy expensive eyeglasses, when you can save money instead?

Affordable — this is where Zenni Optical comes in. You can get affordable glasses for the whole family without having to break the bank! In addition, you don’t have to suffer a fashion faux pas, as Zenni Optical has a “try it” section of their site. You can simply upload your photo or your child’s photo and find the perfect eyeglasses for you!

Saving money is a part of a frugal parent’s life. As parents, we want to give our kids the world without going broke. Unfortunately, we have to squeeze in braces and eyeglasses too, which (as you probably know) can certainly cost a pretty penny!

With Zenni Optical, you can have your cake and eat it too! Why pay hundreds when you don’t have to?

Parent debate: Preschool – yes or no?

Preschool Truck Picture - Michigan Mommas

Before I had kids, I have to admit that I was against early institutionalization of children.  Preschool — in my inexperienced opinion was too much too young.  Of course, this opinion changed for various reasons after I had kids of my own.

The biggest reasoning I had in favor of preschool (after I had kids), was that it’s almost mandatory in this day and age.  When I was in Kindergarten, I learned  my ABC’s, 123′s, Colors, animals, how to stand in line and how to listen and follow “school rules”.  The foundation was being set literally one building block at a time.  However, moving forward 25 years and bringing us to where we (as a society) are at now as far as education; our kids are learning a lot more at a faster pace.

For instance, in preschool kids learn how to write their names, cut with scissors, ABC’s, 123′s and everything else that *I* learned in Kindergarten.  Today’s children are learning how to write sentences in 1st grade and solve simple fractions.  Simple fractions is a skill I started to learn in the second or third grade.

As a parent, I wanted to make sure that my children were not left behind.  I wanted to make sure that they had a firm grasp of basic concepts.  Maybe getting the super-basic skills out of the way in preschool would help pave the way for a better and easier time academically.

With that said, I think it is a personal choice as to whether or not parents send their children to preschool.  Some parents choose to home-preschool their kids.  Others feel as I did in the beginning that preschool is an unnecessary method of institutionalizing young kids early.

Fellow parents, where do you fall in this debate?

Have you ever wanted to be a teacher?

Fellow parents,

There have been times in my life where I have thought of launching a teaching career. There is something that seems so satisfying about helping shape young minds. But then I realize that I do that as a parent. :)

Recently, a fellow mom-friend of mine (who lives in a different state) was telling me about indianapolis teaching fellows. She said that this program allowed recent college graduates to complete a masters degree program in order to teach. This fellowship is called the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowships and offers eligible students $30,000 to complete their Masters degree with the intention of teaching in their field of expertise.

If the teaching candidate completes an online application, that application is then sent to schools (universities) located in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. A chosen candidate (referred to as “fellows”) are then put into a program that pushes for academic excellence, rigorous training and ongoing professional development.

Requirements included in the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Program:

  • A full-time academic year of Master’s degree coursework spent in high-needs classrooms shadowing experienced teachers.
  • Teacher certification is then obtained at the end of the Summer of 2013 in either Indiana, Michigan or Ohio.
  • A year of academic observation / “clinical experiences” in the school environment.  This would include observing and working in urban or rural schools 3 to 5 days a week.
  • The program focuses on working with high-poverty areas that are either rural or urban.
  • Unique programs are designed for the (20) fellows on campus.

If money is an issue, candidates may check into university partners for further financial aid incentives, tuition reduction and / or scholarships given to those who are in the Fellowship program.

This is a great opportunity to help shape the minds of our children and help shape the outlook of our future! :)

Finding good wedding caterers

Guest Blog By: Travis G.

If you’re putting your party in the hands of an event planner, you want to make sure that you find the right one. Here are a few tips that will help you select the best from among good wedding caterers. Waukesha has a variety of caterers to choose from for that perfect wedding, but you need to know what to look for:

1. Decide What You Need – This may seem basic, but you have to know the who, what and when so that the caterer can provide the how. Some caterers or event planners have limitations that may not fit in with your event.

2. Check References – Many people skip this step and it could spell disaster for your event. You want to make sure that you find someone qualified, with a good track record of success, who works well with clients and is able to interpret and manifest their needs.

3. Don’t Forget to Check for Licenses and Permits – Hiring wedding caterers Waukesha with the right credentials is something many people are unaware of. In fact, your event might require this, so it is good to choose a caterer with the proper licensing and/or permits. You also want to ensure that they are insured and carry the right insurance for the event.

There is other common sense things you should do like prepare a list of questions beforehand but, as one last tip, make sure that they are operating out of a permanent facility.

The importance of literature in our lives.

Michigan Mommas - reading bear

I have an intense love for reading.  As a child, my interest in the written word opened up brand new worlds, thoughts and ideas to my small universe.  I was read to at an early age by my mom, dad and grandparents!  They had a way of bringing a story to life that really captivated my interest early on.  It made me want to read more and become entranced in more stories (both fictional and non-fictional).

One of the first things I did as a new parent, was buy a bunch of children’s books for my baby.  I read to him almost every night (even at the tender age of 2-months old).  I continued this tradition for my other two children as well.   As a mom, my hope is to pass on my love for books and reading onto my children.

I firmly believe that having a solid relationship with literature will enable children to communicate effectively and be able to teach themselves.  They will also be able to think outside of the box and embrace new worlds! :)

Sources for Texas Christian Counseling

Guest Blog By: Sarah L.

Have you ever felt as if no one understands you? Do those activities you once enjoyed seem meaningless now? These could be the signs of depression and help should be sought after in order to get your life back on the right path.

You may wonder in whom you can trust your innermost thoughts to in order to put the pieces back together. With the thousands of clinicians in the United States, it is important to make the right choices for mental health counseling. Christian counseling in Houston, Texas offers a Christ-centered approach in helping those unable to manage their emotions, to regain the confidence necessary to go forward in their lives.

Whether you are suffering from a recent loss of employment, marriage difficulties or finding yourself at a loss now that the children have moved away, these problems and more are faced everyday throughout the country, but many do not seek help and try to work things out for themselves. It takes a strong person to ask for help during a time of need, such as experiencing emotional distress.

In the teachings of Christ, He instructed us to “be anxious for nothing” which speaks of worry that in itself can cause mental anguish. Our world in its complexity offers many opportunities to become overwhelmed with life, and during those times, we can lose focus and hope. It is good to know that there are Christian-based counselors available to talk us through our troubles.
