Frugal prices for glasses…

Vision issues run in my family. In fact, I would say that about 40 – 50% of my family wear eyeglasses or contacts. As I get older, I find that I too am having some eye issues. Of course, as a parent, I worry about my children’s vision too.

We live in a world where insurance doesn’t come cheap. In fact, many of us probably live without vision coverage. As you well know, dear reader… glasses, contacts and eye exams just aren’t that cheap! But why suffer and buy expensive eyeglasses, when you can save money instead?

Affordable — this is where Zenni Optical comes in. You can get affordable glasses for the whole family without having to break the bank! In addition, you don’t have to suffer a fashion faux pas, as Zenni Optical has a “try it” section of their site. You can simply upload your photo or your child’s photo and find the perfect eyeglasses for you!

Saving money is a part of a frugal parent’s life. As parents, we want to give our kids the world without going broke. Unfortunately, we have to squeeze in braces and eyeglasses too, which (as you probably know) can certainly cost a pretty penny!

With Zenni Optical, you can have your cake and eat it too! Why pay hundreds when you don’t have to?

Parent debate: Preschool – yes or no?

Preschool Truck Picture - Michigan Mommas

Before I had kids, I have to admit that I was against early institutionalization of children.  Preschool — in my inexperienced opinion was too much too young.  Of course, this opinion changed for various reasons after I had kids of my own.

The biggest reasoning I had in favor of preschool (after I had kids), was that it’s almost mandatory in this day and age.  When I was in Kindergarten, I learned  my ABC’s, 123′s, Colors, animals, how to stand in line and how to listen and follow “school rules”.  The foundation was being set literally one building block at a time.  However, moving forward 25 years and bringing us to where we (as a society) are at now as far as education; our kids are learning a lot more at a faster pace.

For instance, in preschool kids learn how to write their names, cut with scissors, ABC’s, 123′s and everything else that *I* learned in Kindergarten.  Today’s children are learning how to write sentences in 1st grade and solve simple fractions.  Simple fractions is a skill I started to learn in the second or third grade.

As a parent, I wanted to make sure that my children were not left behind.  I wanted to make sure that they had a firm grasp of basic concepts.  Maybe getting the super-basic skills out of the way in preschool would help pave the way for a better and easier time academically.

With that said, I think it is a personal choice as to whether or not parents send their children to preschool.  Some parents choose to home-preschool their kids.  Others feel as I did in the beginning that preschool is an unnecessary method of institutionalizing young kids early.

Fellow parents, where do you fall in this debate?

Have you ever wanted to be a teacher?

Fellow parents,

There have been times in my life where I have thought of launching a teaching career. There is something that seems so satisfying about helping shape young minds. But then I realize that I do that as a parent. :)

Recently, a fellow mom-friend of mine (who lives in a different state) was telling me about indianapolis teaching fellows. She said that this program allowed recent college graduates to complete a masters degree program in order to teach. This fellowship is called the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowships and offers eligible students $30,000 to complete their Masters degree with the intention of teaching in their field of expertise.

If the teaching candidate completes an online application, that application is then sent to schools (universities) located in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. A chosen candidate (referred to as “fellows”) are then put into a program that pushes for academic excellence, rigorous training and ongoing professional development.

Requirements included in the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Program:

  • A full-time academic year of Master’s degree coursework spent in high-needs classrooms shadowing experienced teachers.
  • Teacher certification is then obtained at the end of the Summer of 2013 in either Indiana, Michigan or Ohio.
  • A year of academic observation / “clinical experiences” in the school environment.  This would include observing and working in urban or rural schools 3 to 5 days a week.
  • The program focuses on working with high-poverty areas that are either rural or urban.
  • Unique programs are designed for the (20) fellows on campus.

If money is an issue, candidates may check into university partners for further financial aid incentives, tuition reduction and / or scholarships given to those who are in the Fellowship program.

This is a great opportunity to help shape the minds of our children and help shape the outlook of our future! :)

The importance of literature in our lives.

Michigan Mommas - reading bear

I have an intense love for reading.  As a child, my interest in the written word opened up brand new worlds, thoughts and ideas to my small universe.  I was read to at an early age by my mom, dad and grandparents!  They had a way of bringing a story to life that really captivated my interest early on.  It made me want to read more and become entranced in more stories (both fictional and non-fictional).

One of the first things I did as a new parent, was buy a bunch of children’s books for my baby.  I read to him almost every night (even at the tender age of 2-months old).  I continued this tradition for my other two children as well.   As a mom, my hope is to pass on my love for books and reading onto my children.

I firmly believe that having a solid relationship with literature will enable children to communicate effectively and be able to teach themselves.  They will also be able to think outside of the box and embrace new worlds! :)

State of Michigan offers parenting classes

Michigan Parenting Image

It is interesting what you can find when you Google certain phrases. Today, I decided to Google “Michigan Parenting” to see what comes up in the ol’ search engine. The first link was under “DHS- Parenting Programs“. The state offers parenting classes? I can officially add that to the list of things I did not know.

The State of Michigan offers the following parenting programs:

  • Proud Father and Proud Parents Program.

The Proud Father program focuses on fatherhood and being a nurturing father.  The proud parents program focuses on marriage, family goals and communication / conflict resolution.

These programs are helpful from the standpoint of giving people the tools to do a good job as parents and partners.  I would love to see this brought down from the state level to the local/community level.

What do you think of parenting programs?  Useful or a waste of time?

Mom Question: When the Paci Fairy doesn’t work.

The Paci Fairy

I’ll admit it. Two of my children are paci-kids and I really didn’t mind. I weaned my daughter off of the paci when she was three. I tried doing it sooner but found that she clung on to it even more when her baby brother was born.

The solution? The Paci-Fairy. I bundled up all of her pacifiers and told her the story of the Paci-Fairy and how it was her duty as a big girl to give up her pacis in order to help all of the newborn babies around the world who needed them. So, we put the pacis in an envelope, mailed them and then in the envelope’s place (the next morning) was a gift from the Paci Fairy! My daughter was quite enchanted with this ritual and embraced her “big girl-ness” after that.

Now, my youngest is three and it is time for the Paci-Fairy to strike again. However, I have a feeling that she may have met quite the challenge! He is being very stubborn about this process. Unlike his big sister, he does not want to embrace being a big boy. In the beginning, I restricted his paci use to night-time only (or on car trips). However, as he has gotten older he wants it more and more.

Fellow moms, any words of advice?

Parent Debate: How do you feel about the government placing your family on a diet?

childhood obesity

It is no secret that the obesity epidemic is at an all time record high in the United States. The epidemic is not just affecting adults but also children and teens. Many television shows, documentaries and films are dedicated to showing the epidemic in a very real and dedicated light.

The government’s answer to the problem? Take the obese children away and put them in foster care homes. Because it is the best thing for the child, don’t ya know?

Dr. David Ludwig — an obesity expert at Harvard states that the whole premise behind removing obese kids from their homes is to put them into an environment that is conducive to weight loss and “health”. This is supposed to be the best scenario for all families as the end result is to reunite the parents and children in the end. Provided that everyone is thinner of course.

If I were able to talk to Dr. David Ludwig myself, I think my first question to him would be — do you have kids? Because I can’t believe that any parent in his or her right mind would think this was a good idea. Happy homes broken apart by weight issues — in my opinion would only serve to breed extreme emotional and abandonment issues down the road. The child(ren) will think that they have done something wrong to be taken away from their parents. No matter how much you try to reason with a child and assure them that something tragic is not their fault; they will always end up looking inward because as a child, they do not know or have the capacity (wisdom) if you will, to look outward.

Now, I realize that obesity brings about many health and mental issues and in general is a hard way to live. However, I say that if the parents have the proper tools available to them, then they should be able to use them to help their family. For some families — weight loss is a struggle as much as finances are. Do you want to punish those who are having a hard time of it by taking away their children and uprooting their families? Or do you want to make tools more readily available?

This whole issue would be (in my opinion) one more shining example of how the government wants to make my decisions as a parent for me. Our society as it stands today is so wound tight with public image, political correctness and “kool-aid drinking” theories. In some very fundamental ways, I believe that these kinds of decisions only serve to set our society in a backwards motion.

Is this obesity issue about wanting everyone to be thin and healthy? Or is it centered around the idea of controlling a population’s food? Things to think on.

So tell me fellow citizens. How would you feel about your State’s intervention in your parenting decisions? Would you advocate a program that was put into place to remove obese children from their homes and put into the foster care system?

It is never too late to think Halloween!

Even though we are currently in the throws of a hot hot summer, it is a reality that fall is imminently awaiting its time to return. I have to admit that I am not at all sad about this. Because you see, fall is my absolute favorite time of the year! The weather is usually crisp and gorgeous, kids are back in school and my favorite Holidays arrive one after another! :)

Officially, it is Halloween that kicks off the season. I am always thrilled to find the latest and best Halloween costumes for the kiddies. Last year we had a Mario, Princess and a Groby (from Yo! Gabba Gabba). They were cute as buttons!

Have you been to any good costume parties or Halloween parties? I haven’t been to any Halloween parties in a long time. Although, I may go to one this year provided that I find the perfect Plus Size Costumes !

So even though it is nearing the end of July, I am indeed thinking about Halloween parties and Halloween Costumes | Plus Size Costumes | Childrens Costumes.

What were your little ones dressed up as last year? Do you have a favorite costume of theirs recently or in past years?

Losing post-baby weight struggles

I don’t know about you guys, but for me losing weight has been tough. My body before I had my babies was fit and healthy. Could I stand to lose a few pounds? Sure! At the end of the day however, I felt good about myself and the way I looked.

I gained a lot of weight during my pregnancies and did not manage to lose the extra weight after each baby was born. So, the extra weight seemed to pile on pounds at a time. I tried every diet out there and nothing worked long-term. Being a new mom made dieting much harder than it had been before kids.

Mom guilt sabotages weight loss attempts? Absolutely! I always feel guilty when wanting to do something just for myself. I am very much used to taking care of everyone else and quite frankly, in a way I believe that is the way it should be. However, I also have begun to realize that at some point, I need to take time out to take care of myself.

Recently, I discovered ephedra diet pills. I read up on them and have discovered that they act as a natural fat burner for your body. This looks like a tempting program for me to try out. Of course, before I do I am going to talk to my doctor first as it is what I normally do before starting any weight loss plan. :)

At the end of the day, I know that by taking care of myself, I will be a better mom, wife and person. :)
